Callihan Breaks 1000 Career Points as Vikings Upset Centre

Danville, Ky. - The Berry College women's basketball team (12-8, 6-3 SAA) won their fifth game in a row as they took down the Centre College Colonels 66-57 on Friday evening on the road.

The Vikings got off to a quick start as they opened on a 16-2 run led by six points from Avery Payne and five from Briaiah Lewis as they built an early lead with 2:04 remaining in the first. The Colonels would finally find an answer to the Vikings defense as they finished with the final seven points to get within 16-9 at the end of the first.

The Colonels would continue their momentum into the second as they made it a four point game but Ely Callian answered with a basket to increase the Vikings lead. The Colonels didn't let up as they continued to keep it close but again Callihan kept the Vikings ahead with a huge three to make it 27-21 with 4:33 to go. Once again the Colonels answered but the Vikings held strong with key baskets from Lauren Ellard and Jade Lewis as they held a 36-28 lead at halftime.

The teams traded buckets to start the third until the Viking found momentum with baskets from Payne and Ava Travis to increase their lead to 43-33 midway through the quarter. The Colonels would fight back to get within six but the Vikings continued to score with late baskets from Callihan and Gabby Aiello to push their advantage to 53-43 at the end of the third.

The Colones would again rally to start the fourth but the Vikings defense only allowed two baskets in the first four minutes while the offense got going with Lewis and Payne hitting key shots to increase the lead back to 57-47 with 3:57 to go. The Colonels continued to fight as they made it 61-56 with 1:53 left but the Vikings came through at the free throw line with Callihan and Payne as they came away with a 66-57 upset victory.

Callihan led the Vikings with a double double (16 points, 10 rebounds) as she broke 1,000 points in her career. On the win Head Coach Thomas Johnson said, "It was a good team win, and the defense got it done down the stretch."

The Vikings continue action on the road as they head to Sewanee, TN to take on Sewanee on Sunday, February 8 at 1:00 PM.
