SEWANEE, Tenn. - Elly Callihan came up clutch for The Vikings (13-8, 7-3 SAA) calling game at the free throw line to spoil senior night for the Sewanee Tigers, the final score 47-46. Jade Lewis was the engine for the Vikings, ending the game with a team-leading 17 points and 7 rebounds.
After honoring their seniors, the whistle sounded and the ball was tipped, giving the Tigers the first possession of the game. Riding the energy from honoring the seniors, the Tigers battled into an eight to nothing advantage over Berry through about 5 minutes of play.
Jade Lewis put the Vikings on the scoreboard, but they continued to struggle, finding themselves down by nine points with 3 minutes on the clock. Lauren Ellard made a three to take the lid off of the basket for Berry and sparked an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to a point as the quarter came to a close. Sewanee remained out in front, the score 12-11.
Sewanee continued their cold spell as the second quarter began, and Jade Lewis took advantage, putting the Vikings ahead by two points on a three-pointer. Berry couldn't get much further ahead as the Tigers snapped their cold spell at the charity stripe and kept the score tied as the quarter continued.
With two minutes to go, Lauren Ellard put the Vikings back ahead by two at the free throw line. She went back to the charity stripe after Sewanee's coach was given a technical and added one more point to the advantage. Maintaining the possession after the technical, Jade Lewis kept the scoring going for the Vikings, making a floater to put Berry ahead by five points.
Sewanee kept the quarter from completely slipping away after making a three to shrink the deficit back to two and forcing the Vikings to commit a shot clock violation with 18 seconds left in the quarter. With the final possession of the quarter, the Tigers carved their way to the basket to tie the game going into the half; the score knotted up at 21.
Lauren Ellard probed her way to the basket to put the Vikings back ahead as the second half began, but the lead was short-lived as the Tigers answered from the perimeter to put themselves ahead by a point. The Tigers and the Vikings battled on the court, trading the lead as the quarter continued.
With about five minutes on the clock, Jade Lewis made a three to put the Vikings ahead by two points. Briaiah Lewis followed her bucket by getting to the free throw line to match Berry's largest lead of the day, going ahead by five. Once again, Sewanee made a timely three to keep themselves close, but Elly Callihan responded with a three of her own to go back ahead by five.
Jade Lewis stayed hot and made another three to put the Vikings ahead by eight points with three minutes left in the quarter, and Briaiah Lewis pushed the lead to double digits at the charity stripe.
With the final possession of the quarter, the Tigers got themselves to the free throw line, but couldn't cut into the deficit, missing both free throws, remaining down by eight as the quarter expired. The score, 31-39.
Briaiah Lewis got the quarter started for the Vikings by extending the lead back to 10 at the charity stripe. The double-digit advantage was short-lived as Sewanee came down and made a three. Finding some life offensively, the Tigers continued to work from behind the arch to bring themselves within four. With five minutes left on the clock for the quarter, the Tigers battled on the glass to bring the score to within a possession with 5 minutes to go.
Elly Callihan provided a cushion for Berry, nailing a jumper to go back up by four, but Sewanee immediately answered on the other end, and with two and a half minutes to go, the Tigers went ahead by one on a three-pointer. Berry couldn't respond, and the Tigers remained ahead by one with about a minute to go.
Leaving a timeout, Sewanee couldn't extend their lead, and Vikings came down with it with 50 seconds left on the game clock. Briaiah Lewis probed inside but couldn't take the lead. The Vikings had another chance after Sewanee lost it out of bounds, and the Atlanta native made up for it by getting herself to the charity stripe. She split the free throws, giving Sewanee the possession with the game knotted at 44.
With 25 seconds left the Tigers beat the pressure and advanced the ball. They called another timeout with 14.5 seconds left on the game clock. They inbounded the ball and set up the play. With seven seconds left, the sent it towards the basket for a layup, but Berry tipped it out with 3 seconds left. Remaining with the ball, Sewanee sent the ball in and made a prayer with 1.4 seconds left on the clock.
Leaving their own timeout, Berry got it into Elly Callihan, and the Vikings got a prayer of their own she was fouled on a three-point attempt. She earned all three to give the lead back to the Vikings with 0.8 seconds left, and the Tigers couldn't respond. The final score in the Viking's favor, 47-46.
The Vikings return to Mount Berry to take on the Southwestern University Pirates Friday, February 13th, at 6:00p.m.
