NCAA TENNIS: Magical year ends for the Vikings

ATLANTA – The historic Berry College women's tennis season came to an end at Emory on Saturday. Paced by senior Gabrielle Clark's program-record setting 106th career doubles victory, top-ranked Emory posted a 5-0 win over the Vikings in the second round of the tournament.

Berry's campaign came to a close with an 18-3 ledger for the season. With the win, the Eagles will advance to the third round of the NCAA Championships to face Washington & Lee University (18-2), which reached the third round with a 5-0 victory over Sewanee earlier in the day on Saturday, after a first-round bye.

"It was a fun and successful year for the Berry tennis program," said Berry Head Coach Clay Hightower. "We're excited to have made the national tournament, and are pleased with the way we played against such a strong Emory team. I think the ladies will be even more motivated next season after tasting the excitement of the national tournament."

Emory won the first two doubles matches to be decided by 8-0 scores, with senior Brenna Kelly and freshman Katarina Su defeating Lauren Byrket and Abbie Smith at third doubles, followed by a second doubles win for sophomores Beatrice Rosen and Madison Gordon over Kaleigh Carpenter and Heidi Seabaugh. Emory senior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Michelle Satterfield completed the sweep with an 8-1 win over Emma O'Reilly and Mary Cerny at first doubles.

Su claimed the first singles point of the match for Emory with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over Berry's Valerie DeWandel at sixth singles. Satterfield completed the Emory win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second singles over Cerny.

Emory was up a set on the other four courts as well when play was stopped. Clark led O'Reilly 6-1, 5-0 at first singles, Rosen was up 6-0, 3-0 over Byrket at third singles, Goodman led Carpenter 6-1, 5-0 at fourth singles and Gordon held a 6-2, 1-0 advantage over Seabaugh at fifth singles.
