Box Score ROME, Georgia -- The Berry College women's soccer defeated Rhodes College, 3-0, at Ford Field on Sunday. With the win, the Vikings clinched at least a share of the Southern Athletic Association regular season championship.
BC improved to 14-2 and to 6-0 in the SAA. The shutout was the 12th this season for Berry. The Lynx dropped to 9-4-2, 4-1-1.
The home team recorded all of its goals in the first half. Bella Fornuto opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Maggie Midkiff earned the assist as the freshman finished with a hard shot to the far post.
Tessa Piety tallied in the 27th minute for Berry. Midkiff picked up her second assist of the day on the play.
In the 30th minute Rachel LeRoy scored on a penalty kick for the match's final goal.
Berry had the edge in shots, 14-10, and both clubs took two corner kicks.
Jackie McGivney (three saves) started and earned the win. Melissa Sanchez recorded one save in the final 45 minutes.
For Rhodes, Chandler Kuhlman started and took the defeat. She had two saves before being replaced by Anna Maldanado. She netted five saves in the final 61:37.
"We may have clinched a share of the championship, but we don't want to share anything," said BC Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "We have one more game left and want to finish in first place."
The Vikings close SAA regular season play next Saturday when Sewanee visits on Senior Day.
