Women's Soccer holds off Piedmont, 2-1

Box Score

ROME, Ga. – Tessa Piety and Kim Fischer scored first-half goals as Berry College defeated Piedmont, 2-1, on Saturday.

The Vikings improved to 2-0 and PC lost its season-opener.

Piety tallied in the third minute. She pounced on a deflection and booted in a shot from 12 yards out.

Just four minutes later, Fischer netted her second goal of the season. Molly Johnson earned the assist on the play. The score remained 2-0 at the break.

Berry was cruising along and then Taylor Hockley halved the BC lead with a score in the 81st minute. Laura Goodwin was credited with the assist.

The Lions appeared energized and immediately responded with two shots. Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Sanchez, however, stopped both attempts and the Vikings held on for the win. Sanchez had three save in the match and improved to 2-0 for the year.

Berry led in shots (10-7) and corner kicks (5-3).

"I'm very happy to start the year with two wins," said Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "We really played well, but I think the heat and fatigue set in late in the game. This a good win against a strong team."

Berry now heads to Ohio to play at Capital University (Friday) and then Denison (Sunday).
