RALEIGH, N.C. – With the sun beating down, Berry (1-0) scored an early goal that accounted for the only offense in the game, propelling Berry to a 1-0 win over Guilford (0-1) in a Saturday afternoon matchup at the Meredith College Labor Day Classic.

Sophomore Rachel LeRoy passed to senior Kim Treese for the decisive goal at 12:58. The score marked Treese's second career goal.

"It was one of those very close games that could go either way," said Berry head coach Lorenzo Canalis. "I was proud of our combination of returning players and freshmen, and the way they brought the game home."

When asked about the game in general, Canalis stressed the weather.

"It was incredibly hot today," Canalis said. "I think my shoes melted. Summer was back with a vengeance."

Berry held the edge in terms of shots, 9-8. Freshman Sara Dillon fired off four shots for Berry while Libby Hicks paced Guilford with three.  Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Clement notched the win for Berry after making four saves. Cori Karoly took the loss for Guilford and also recorded four saves.

Berry returns to action tomorrow against Meredith at noon.

"Tomorrow's game should be more of the same," Canalis said. "I would predict another very close game."
