ATLANTA, Ga. - The Berry College men's tennis team wrapped up their regular season with a thrilling one point 4-3 victory over the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels on Sunday afternoon on the road.
The Vikings got off to a quick start in doubles as they one the first doubles matchup with
Jake Chapman/Aiden Benoulid prevailing 6-3. It looked like the Vikings would take the point with their second doubles pair of
Jace Goode/
Xavier Deckard but they fell in a close one 7(7)-6(5) as the Stormy Petrels tied it up.
Anderson Lambert/Leo Nedkov then sealed the doubles point for the Vikings winning a thrilling match at third doubles 7(8)-6(6) as they took a 1-0 lead.
The Stormy Petrels then battled back as Goode fell 6-1, 6-3 at third singles and Nedkov fell 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles. The Vikings would keep the lead though as Deckard prevailed 6-3, 7-5 at sixth singles and Lambert won 6-2, 6-4 at fifth singles. Needing one more point to seal the win the Vikings still had two matches to go and both went to three sets. The Stormy Petrels would tie the game back up as Benoualid lost a close one on second singles 0-6, 7-5, 3-6. The Vikings then got a big performance out of Chapman at first singles as he dropped the first set 6-1 before rallying to win the next two 7-5, 7-5 to give the Vikings a thrilling 4-3 victory.
The Vikings clinch the fifth seed in the SAA Championships and will take on fourth seeded Rhodes on Friday, April 24 at 10:00 AM ET.
