MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - A sunny warm day at Valhalla warranted the conditions for a great way for the Berry Vikings to rebound from their first loss of the season from the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers. The Vikings took on the Piedmont Lions who came into this fixture undefeated (3-0) and had some built up momentum they were planning to use to get a good result against the Vikings. Fortunately, the loss from the previous weekend was only the fuel that fired the Vikings to beat the Lions 15-7Â in search of momentum for their next games on the road.
The first period looked promising for the Lions having 2 of the first 3 goals within the game taking the early lead. Junior,
Finn McClendon was the Vikings' goal scorer during this period ,which makes this the 2nd game in a row in which he has scored in a game, however the Vikings would turn this period around with Junior,
Owen Morini, leveled out the game with paved the way for the Vikings to start breaking away with Morini scoring his second of the game which was his 9th goal of the season giving the Vikings the lead. The period closed out with McClendon scoring his 2nd goal of the game, establishing some real estate for the Vikings leading into the 2nd period.
The second period was purely dominant for the Vikings ending with the score being 9-2 leading into the second half of the game. Senior,
Michael Beirne scored 2 goals in the period,
Finn McClendon, got his hat trick, marking his 7th goal of the season being one of the leading scorers for the Vikings. Freshman,
Andrew Ingram put forth his contribution to scoring his 2nd goal of the season along with scoring 2 games in a row. Senior,
Andrew Duffy, also making this the 2nd game in a row in which he has scored, closed out the 1st half leaving the Vikings extremely confident and ready to seal the deal in the 2nd half.
The 3rd period was yet another goal heavy display from the Vikings, leaving the score 14-3 leading into the 4th and final quarter. Setting the tone was, Senior, Caleb Johnson scoring his 2nd goal of the season for the Vikings, followed by, Junior,
Peter Balthazor's 1st goal of the season to extend the Vikings' lead over the Lions. Then
Andrew Duffy then marked his 5th goal of the season and also marking the second game in a row in which he has scored a goal. Finally, to close out the 3rd period, sophomore,
Boston Juliao puts the nail in the coffin scoring his 4th goal of the season, but also marking his 3rd game in a row in which he has scored a goal. The results of the Vikings going on an offensive tear, would signify the Lions' incapability of reeling this game back within grasps for the 4th period.
The 4th and final period of the match proved to be the most even of the lot, with the game ending at 16-6 in favor of the Lions.
Michael Beirne, sealed his hat trick away, marking his 8th goal of the season providing that extra cushion for the Vikings to take this victory home. The Lions would go on a 3 goal run trying to limit the damage done to the lead established from the early Periods of the game, but their momentum would be shut down by, Junior,
Collin Dean scoring his 1st goal of the season in the dying seconds of the game to ensure victory for the Vikings.
The Vikings will spend the next 3 games on the road in Virginia, expecting to carry out the momentum gained from this game and prevail over the Bridgewater College Eagles in Bridgewater, Virginia on March 7th, 1:00 PM.Â
