MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Vikings (9-14, 5-7 SAA) couldn't sustain against the Trinity University Tigers, allowing them to escape the Cage with a 73-68 victory. Issac Martin ended the day as the leading scorer for the Vikings with 15 points.
The Tigers got the first possession of the game after they won the tip. They also got on the scoreboard first, making it look effortless in the post. On the other end, Issac Martin came out on fire for the Vikings. He couldn't miss scoring their first ten points to keep them within reach of the Tigers. Despite the hot start, the Tigers kept themselves out in front, finding themselves ahead by two after the first time out.
Berry kept battling out of the break, but Trinity jumped ahead to a game-high six-point lead with 11 minutes on the clock. The Vikings didn't go down much further as the quarter continued, and Nile King gave the Vikings their first lead of the game with two minutes left in the half. The lead was short-lived though, as Trinity immediately tied it up at the charity stripe and jumped back in front after getting in transition.
The Vikings ended with the last possession of the half but couldn't turn it into points before the deadline, remaining behind by five as the half expired, the score 36-41.
The Tigers immediately extended their lead to seven coming out of the halftime break. Cameron Pope scored the first points for Berry to bring the deficit back down to five. The Tigers were able to maintain their cushion as the half progressed, but with 12 minutes left in the game, the Vikings went on a 7-0 run to put themselves down by one. Trinity recovered, ending the Vikings' run with a three and an opportunity in transition to go back ahead by five.
Once again, the Vikings fought back within one with about 9 minutes left in the game following a jumper by Drew Winegarden, but the Tigers didn't allow them to push ahead, instead going back ahead by six with seven minutes left.
The Vikings brought the deficit back within five down the stretch, but the Tigers proved to be a problem on the glass, using their height to their advantage to keep themselves ahead as time expired, the final score 68-73.
The Vikings ride to Jackson, Mississippi, on Thursday, February 19th, looking to show out smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy against the Millsaps College Colonels at 8:30 p.m.
