Vikings Fall to Tigers After Tough Fourth

San Antonio, Texas - The Berry College women's basketball team (7-7, 1-2 SAA) dropped a tough conference game 72-54 to the Trinity University Tigers on the road on Sunday afternoon.

The Vikings looked to set the tone with back to back layups from Briaiah Lewis and Lauren Ellard helping them to an early 9-6 lead midway through the first. The Tigers would rally to go up 12-9 but the Vikings came right back with back to back buckets from Lewis and Alana Azeta to retake a 13-12 lead with 1:50 to go. The Tigers answered though as they took a 17-13 lead at the end of the first. The Vikings tried to rally to start the second but the Tigers continued their momentum as they increased their lead to 25-13. The Vikings finally got an answer as Avery Payne scored a tip but they couldn't put together as rally as they trailed 36-17 at halftime.

The Tigers scored the first basket of the third to go up by 21 but the Vikings didn't give up as Callie Jackson nailed a three to spark a furious 18-0 run led by nine points from Jackson and seven from Lewis as they pulled within 38-35 with 2:29 left. The Tigers would find an answer to increase their lead back to 43-35 with 1:42 to go but the Vikings kept coming as a layup by Jade Lewis got them within 43-41 with :15 seconds remaining. The Tigers would get the last bucket of the quarter as the Vikings trailed 45-41 at the end of the third. The Vikings tried to keep their momentum going into the fourth but the Tigers started on a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 54-41 with 6:22 left. The Vikings tried to stage another comeback but were unable to do so as they fell 72-54.

Lewis led the Vikings with 17 points and nine rebounds. Jackson added 14 on 4-for-7 from the three point line.

The Vikings continue action at home as they host Centre in their conference home opener on Friday, January 16 at 6:00 PM.
