MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Berry fell in their opening match against the host of the Regional, Huntingdon 4-1 this morning.
Ava Fouts earned her start in the circle today after not seeing the Hawks earlier this season. The sophomore threw five innings allowing six hits and one run.Â
That run came in the bottom of the first inning after walking the leadoff batter and then a double from the two spot to score for the Hawks.Â
After the initial score in the first, things went quiet with both teams tightening up on defense,
Paige Bennett had an opening double as well, but the Vikings were unable to score from hers.
In the bottom of the third, Huntingdon tried to make some more noise with a double and a single to put runners on first and third, but a pop up to left and a ground out to the short stop got Berry out of the inning unscathed.
Berry's defense continued to get out of tough situations with Fouts in the circle against the top ranked Hawks. The bottom of the fifth stranded two runners for Huntingdon and Berry finally made a move to the board in the top of the sixth inning.
Elly Bennett led off with a double through the left side and with one out
Lauren Cothern stepped up to the plate four a huge double to score Bennett and tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the sixth, Huntingdon scored three runs, unearned, as
Casey Holloway entered the circle. Holloway did her thing and got the first two outs. A costly error came after the first two outs and it sparked some runs for the Hawks.
Berry was unable to respond to those runs in the top of the seventh as they fell to the host.
The Vikings will fight their way back in the bracket tomorrow taking on Transylvania at 2:30 PM ET.
