Vikings Rally to Stay Alive Against Transylvania, Fall to Emory in Elimination Game

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In day two of the Huntingdon Regional, the Vikings took down Transylvania to advance and fell to Emory in the elimination game.

Game One: Berry 1 - Transylvania 0
In the first elimination of the day, Hannah Gore earned the win in the circle despite the team having six hits compared to the Pioneers eight for the game.

Transy came out strong in the top of the first inning, but the Viking defense stranded two runners to fly by into the bottom of the inning. From that point on, Berry and Transylvania struggled to get on base with only one runner stranded throughout the next four innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Pioneers aimed to make a move with two hits including a double and a Berry error. Luckily for Berry, Bradynn Belcher caught a foul out and the next batter flied out to right field where Erica Bennett claimed the final out.

Berry found the plate in the bottom of the sixth. It opened up with three hits from Elly Bennett, Paige Bennett, and Lauren Cothern. Freshman Avery Greeson came to the plate and her sacrifice fly scored Elly Bennett, who made sure to leave at the right time after a fault earlier in the game that cost the Vikings a run.

Three more outs and it was over, the Vikings advanced to take on Emory in the next elimination game in the blazing heat of Montgomery.

Game Two: Berry 1 - Emory 2
Game two was another tight game. This was a battle of Georgia hosted in Montgomery. Having split in the regular season at Berry's home field, the Vikings knew this would be another tough matchup.

Ava Fouts was in the circle as she was the pitcher of record from the win in regular season.

With a quick first inning, the Vikings looked to make the first move in the top of the second. With singles from Lauren Cothern and Erica Bennett, a sac bunt from Greeson pushed Cothern in scoring position, but quick fielding decisions and a great catch put Emory back on the field stranding two Berry runners.

Three hits in the fourth scored a run for the Vikings to put them on top 1-0. That one run would see Emory with a pitching change for the Eagles and their new pitcher would come in and secure the win.

The Eagles found their way on top in the fifth with two runs off of one hit and an error by the Vikings.  Berry had two more shots at the plate after Emory went up by one, but the bats just could not find the gaps and the Vikings closed out their season.
