MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Under the lights of Valhalla the Berry women's lacrosse team put in work this evening to secure a thrilling overtime win against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels at 11-10.
The first period was rough for the Vikings as Oglethorpe outscored them 5-1 to take an early lead with
Myskina Bolavong in goal. Led by freshman
Isabel Fransen in the second, the Vikings began their beautiful comeback. Fransen's back-to-back goals cut the deficit and as the Petrels were able to swing one more goal before the half, Berry was able to add two more to just be down one (6-5).
Closing out the second period on a 2-0 run, Berry carried that energy into the third and extended that run to 6-0 run with Annakate Estock's tying goal and
Molley Cross's goal to take the lead. Fransen still kept things going as with her third goal of the game in the third period and by the time the horn sounded the Vikings had gained control of the game at 9-8 with two late goals from Oglethorpe.
The fourth period was an affair. Oglehtorpe's Cuni tied the game at 9 quickly but
Katie Claire Smith took back the lead with still 11 minutes to play. As time winded down and both teams looked to make a move, Oglethorpe's goal in the last two minutes would force overtime play at Valhalla.
With three minutes on the clock before switching ends, Bolavong held strong in the goal for Berry in a golden goal situation. The Petrels won the initial draw control but Fransen's caused turnover gave Berry the opportunity to convert, but a subsequent Berry turnover before the three minute mark stopped play as both teams were unable to get a shot off.
In the final three minutes of overtime Smith for the Vikings would win the initial draw. However, a Berry turnover close to midfield left Oglethorpe's Conza and Berry's Bolavong in a one-on-one situation for the game. With Oglethorpe fans on their feet in what seemed to be a coming win, Bolavong rose to the occasion and saved the shot from Conza and saved the game.
With the ball in Myskina's hands she threw it up the field for the clear and Cross passed it to Mashburn in front of the goal for the game winning goal on their home turf!
Berry will look to top this performance against Centre on Sunday for senior day at 11:00 AM.
