MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The women's lacrosse team closed out their regular season home games this afternoon with a great win on senior day over the Centre Colonels at 17-13.
Katie Claire Smith led the day in goals, scoring five, while
Dani Taraska had four with three assists. Defensively
Myskina Bolavong earned the win between the pipes with her nine saves while Taraska also pitched in six caused turnovers.
Berry went up early 3-0 with two goals from Taraska and one from Annakate Estock. Centre's Sweasy was able to find the back of the net with a minute left, but standout freshman
Isabel Fransen matched her goal with a late one of her own to take the first period at 4-1.
To kick off the second, the Vikings again found a 3-0 run to shoot up 7-1 with Smith grabbing her first of five in the period. Things began to get shaky for the Vikings with turnovers and not winning draw controls. Centre found some momentum and put up six goals in the second to cut the Berry lead and bring the score to 8-7 at the half.
In the second half, head coach
Brittni Hall began to rally the troops to send off the seniors on a high note at home, but the Vikings could not get it to click until the fourth period. In the third, Centre outscored Berry 4-3 and went up 11-9 before Berry found their 6-0 run that went into the fourth.
For a stint,
Dani Taraska took four consecutive draws that all led to goals and momentum for her team. Once the Vikings recaptured their lead with two minutes remaining the third, there was no turning back.
A dominant fourth period allowed Centre only two goals and Smith captured two late ones to be the teams leading scorer in the senior day win.
Next Saturday, the Vikings travel to Memphis, Tennessee, to take on Rhodes College for their regular season finale.
