CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Berry Men's Lacrosse team traveled to Maryland to face non-conference opponent Washington College Shoremen, ultimately losing the match 12-6.
The first quarter showcased the defensive skills of both teams, with the ball changing possession frequently and several forced turnovers. The deadlock was broken by the Shoremen, who quickly scored two goals, taking a 0-2 lead.
Freshman #18 Tyler Gabrielse got the Vikings on the board late in the first quarter with a put-back goal, which ignited the Vikings' offense.
In the second quarter, the Vikings began demonstrating their competitiveness with tough defensive plays, making their physical presence known and declaring, "If you want to score, it's going to hurt." On the offensive side, #14 Finn McClendon stepped up, scoring two goals and bringing the score to 3-5 as the teams headed into halftime.
As the third quarter began, the Vikings executed an impressive two-minute man-down defensive stand, culminating in another goal from #14 Finn McClendon, narrowing the gap to one goal at 5-4. However, the Shoremen quickly responded with three unanswered goals, extending their lead to 4-8.
Undeterred, #1 Caleb Johnston won the faceoff at the X and drove to the cage, scoring to cut the Shoremen's lead to three goals, ending the third quarter at 5-8.
The Vikings appeared to lose momentum in the fourth quarter as the Shoremen went on a four-goal run, establishing a comfortable seven-goal lead at 12-5. Demonstrating determination, the Vikings' #11 Ethan Perlakowski scored one final goal with only a minute left, resulting in a final score of 6-12.
The Berry Men's Lacrosse team will be eager to secure their first win in their next game against Hampden-Sydney on February 22nd, which will take place at Hampden-Sydney.
