JACKSON, Miss. - Berry took to Jackson to take on the Majors of Millsaps this evening, taking down the SAA opponent 80-74.
Parker Godwin led the way increasing the Vikings win streak to three in a row, their largest streak so far this season, coming at a good time in Southern Athletic Association play.
Godwin was just shy of a double-double with 18 and 9 against the Majors and
Braxton Benham was close behind with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Isaac Martin and
Drew Winegarden started the night off hot with back-to-back triples and Martin added his second shortly after for a quick lead in the game in the Hangar Dome. Six minutes in, the Majors caught back up and seemed not impressed by the early threes, taking their own advantage (12-11).Â
Now the game went back and forth with teams trading baskets and a few ties. Winegarden finally shut that down with another three on the Vikings way to a 7-0 run right before the two-minute mark.
Still the Majors refused to give up and capitalized on second chance points until the buzzer with a quick tip in to make it a one possession game at the half, Vikings up 38-35.
Berry never gave up their lead in the second half and built one as large as 14 points.
After the 12-0 run from the Vikings which was sponsored by big plays from Benham and Martin, the Majors found their own 9-0 run to spark some energy in the gym.
A dunk in the paint for Millsaps put them down by only four with seven minutes still to play. Berry was able to respond with seven quick unanswered points to drag the lead back out while the final two minutes became a game of fouls and free throws as Millsaps fired their last attempt.
Berry returns to SAA action next weekend against Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas on January 24.
