Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Aaron Ursin

Berry's Three-Point Shooting Pushes Them Past Centre

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Men's Basketball took to the court on Sunday afternoon to face the Centre Colonels, where they won in convincing fashion, 91-68.

Canon Armstead came in clutch with a jaw-dropping seven three-pointers on 7/8 shooting from beyond the arc for a total of 21 points. Armstead's barrage from three-point land is tied for third all-time for total three-pointers in a game in school history.

Drew Winegarden and Cameron Pope also came up big for the Vikings as they poured in 9 points each to put the Vikings on top.

Things got started early in the first half for the Vikings when Canon Armstead dished the ball to Jacob Morgan who laced an open three-pointer to give Berry an early 3-0 lead. Following a 7-3 run by Centre, Braxton Benham drove to the paint and pushed a sweet no-look pass to Nile King who finished an easy layup to cut the Colonel lead to just one point with 15:05 to play in the first half.

Later in the half, Canon Armstead knocked down a fastbreak 3-pointer that lit up The Cage as the Vikings earned a 14-12 lead with 13:30 left in the half. Following the 12-minute media timeout, Jacob Morgan found himself open and drained a three-pointer to give Berry a 19-16 advantage. The Vikings then opened up a 13-point lead before the Colonels fought back and found themselves on a 9-0 run to close the half, leaving the Berry lead at just 4, 38-34 at the break.

Early in the second half, the Vikings began to set the tone and pace of the game with their lights out play from beyond the arc. Braxton Benham found Drew Winegarden open outside as he buried a 3-pointer to bring the Viking lead to 7, 43-36 with 17:50 to play. Winegarden was not done there though, he continued to hunt his shot as he knocked down another 3-pointer with 17:06 to play, giving the Vikings a comfortable nine-point lead.

As the second half progressed, the Canon Armstead show began. Parker Godwin swung the ball to Armstead, who drained another three-pointer to up the Berry lead to 12 with 16:25 left in the half. It was the same connection a few minutes later, as Godwin found Armstead again for yet another three-point bomb that extended the lead back out to twelve. Brandon Stoudemire then got in on the action as he drove strong to the basket and got fouled where he knocked down both free throws to extend the Berry lead to 14 with 13:30 to play.

Centre was able to cut the lead back down to 10, but Canon Armstead was not phased. He calmly found space in transition off of a Drew Winegarden steal where Armstead laced another 3-point bomb to extend the lead back to 13. Following that, a 9-2 run (including two more 3-pointers from Armstead) by the Vikings essentially put the game out of reach for the Colonels. The unselfish play carried Berry down the stretch as they picked up their first SAA victory over Centre, 91-68.

The Vikings are back in action at home on January 15 at 8 PM ET to take on Oglethorpe University.
