GREENSBORO, NC - The curtain closes for Berry Men's Basketball in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament with a loss to tournament host Guilford, 87-70.
In the game
Blake Campbell hit his 1000
th career point, closing out his amazing senior year with 1K.
The loss ends the 16-game winning streak for the SAA Champions, who made a huge comeback from the beginning of the year.
The Vikings began with a great showing in the first half as
Braxton Benham opened up the scoring with a three, taking a lead that would be held on to across the first six minutes of play.
A three by the Quakers stole the lead and the rest of the first half consisted of back-and-forth basketball with traded field goals. Benham's free throw late in the first gave Berry the three-point lead, but the home team quickly pushed out a 5-0 run, ending with late three to snag the two point lead at the half (44-42).
Once Guilford went up by three in the second half, there was no turning back. The first four minutes mirrored the first twenty minutes, but a 9-2 run by the Quakers took the game almost halfway through the second.
Across the boxscore, almost all the stats look the same, the same number of times each team shot, turnovers, free throws, what the game really came down to was putting the ball in the basket at a high percentage, Guilford shot 57% from the field while the Vikings shot 45%.
Berry ends their season with a 19-10 record as conference champions who had an amazing turnaround.
