SHREVEPORT, La. - Men's Basketball traveled to Louisiana to take on the Centenary Gents, the Vikings had five players in double figures and 19 assists in an impressive 81-70 road victory.
It was a career day for Sophomore guard Isaac Martin, who lit up the scoring column with 21 points, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds. Martin also knocked down 6 three-pointers to power his effort. Parker Godwin also earned the first double-double of his career with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Issac Martin started the show for the Vikings with a transition three-pointer that gave the Vikings an early lead, 3-0. A string of missed threes from the Vikings midway through the first half caused them to fall behind, 15-20. The Vikings slowly crept back into the game behind a 5-point run by Parker Godwin, who knocked down a three-point shot and banked in a layup to give the Vikings a 24-20 lead. The Gents would then go on a 14-3 run to take a 34-27 lead with three minutes to play in the first half. Jacob Morgan and Canon Armstead earned trips to the free-throw line that bought the Vikings back within striking distance. Then, just as the half was about to expire, Braxton Benham pump-faked a contesting defender and knocked down a beautiful side-step 3-pointer just before the buzzer sounded to cut the Centenary lead to just 5, 38-33. Â
In the second half, it was Jacob Morgan who hit a big three-pointer from the corner to cut even deeper into the Centenary lead. On the Vikings' next possession, Drew Winegarden sliced through the lane, drew the contact, finished a tough layup, and completed the and-one. Another Vikings' stop then led to another Jacob Morgan three-pointer from the corner, as the Vikings began to pick apart the Centenary zone defense. Unselfish play by the Vikings continued to be the story when Parker Godwin zipped a pass over to the red-hot Issac Martin for another three-pointer, pushing the Viking lead to ten, 53-43. Â
Later in the half, the Centenary Gents clawed their way back into it, cutting the Viking lead to just 6 with 6 minutes left to play. Jacob Morgan was having none of that though, as he would then score 5 out of the next 8 points for Berry, pushing the lead out to 12, 72-60, with just 4 minutes left.Â
Smart ball-handling by the Viking backcourt kept the Gents at bay in the final minutes, as the Vikings' dominant performance from beyond the arc carried them to victory. Berry shot 41% (16-39) from three-point range compared to Centenary's 31% (9-29). The Vikings also outrebounded the Gents, 35-31.
Berry's double-figure scorers included Issac Martin (21), Jacob Morgan (16), Drew Winegarden (13), Parker Godwin (12), and Braxton Benham (11). Â
The Vikings head to Tennessee on November 19 to take on Maryville College at 7PM ET.Â
