MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Vikings finalized their regular season in today's senior day contest, drawing with Oglethorpe at 2-2.
With the Southern Athletic Association rankings up in the air, both teams came to play today, looking to secure a win which would result in a first round bye on the conference tournament. However, both teams held on for a hard fought tie.
Adoffo El Bey started things off early, notching the first goal in the first two minutes of play, shocking their opponent. El Bey's goal kept Berry on top until the 18th minute when the Stormy Petrels were able to find the back of the net past
Cooper Cherry, the Berry goalkeeper who leads the SAA in shutouts.
After the initial two goals, the rest of the first period consisted of one shot by
Jensen Brown as both teams tightened up their defense with a lot on the line.
The second half was stagnant until the 80th minute of play when Oglethorpe found their second goal off a blocked shot to put Cherry out of position, a nearby Petrel found an easy goal. With the fans in disbelief and less than ten minutes to play, graduate
Tracy Moon stepped up and put the team on his back.
A minute after what seemed to be the game winning goal,
Nick Hamilton soared a ball past Oglethorpe defenders to Moon for a sweet header to tie the game between the top SAA teams. Now both teams were looking to push for another goal to break the tie, with the Petrels getting three more shots off compared to the Vikings one. However, neither team would be able to convert as the 90 minute battle came to a close.
After the tie, the Vikings took the time to honor their nine seniors for their hard work and dedication:
