Vikings Outlast Warriors in 3-1 Victory on the Road

CONWAY, Ark. - The Berry Vikings triumphed over the Hendrix Warriors in a thrilling 3-1 match on the road at Grove Gymnasium.

Leading the way for the Vikings was Madie Whitehead with 13 kills and Lura Underwood with 11. Feeding those two monsters the ball was setter Lindsey MacDiarmid with 33 assists in the four set match, and at the net freshman Blakely Barnes had a high 5 blocks.

In set one the Warriors and Vikings battled to a close 25-23 victory for Berry. The Vikings got down as much as 10-4 until Barnes ended the scoring frenzy for the home team with a huge kill. However, the Vikings would not catch back up a six-point run was sparked again from Barnes and was sponsored by some key Hendrix errors. Bella Boston's kill took the lead and gave the team the momentum they needed at 20-19 to finish off the Warriors.

The valiant effort in set one took some energy and the Vikings were unable to maintain the same effort in set two as they fell 25-20. The only time the team led was the first two points of the set, then Hendrix held control. Whitehead began to come alive at the end of the set, but Underwood carried the team and more bad sets from Hendrix aided the scoring for Berry.

Now it was time for the Vikings to reclaim their mark and take set three in yet another close contest at 25-22. The team rattled off three kills, a service ace from MacDiarmid and an error by Hendrix before their opponent even put points on the board. Up 9-2 with Whitehead leading the way, Berry held their foot on the gas until at 24-18 Hendrix took four straight to place some fear into the Vikings, but Underwood closed it out assisted by MacDiarmid to go up 2-1 in the match.

Berry closed it out in four with a dominate performance. Realizing they were tired of playing around they shut down any hope for the Warriors in a tremendous 25-14 set four win. The key moment of the fourth set was an error for the home team that boosted Berry to a 12-3 run that ended the set.

Berry returns to action October 19th against ranked opponent Emory in Atlanta.
