Vikings March to Sweep in SAA Doubleheader

No. 8 Berry never trailed in the 12 innings it played of a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Rhodes Saturday as the Vikings defeated the Lynx, 10-2 (6) and 13-0 (6), in Memphis, Tenn., in softball action.

Game One: Berry 10, Rhodes 2 (6)
Morgan Frye had her second consecutive 3-for-4 day at the plate with a homer as the Vikings closed out Rhodes in six innings.

Frye connected on a one-out homer in the first inning to put Berry on top. After Rhodes came back to tie in the bottom of the inning, Berry moved ahead for good with three runs in the second as Jamie Jang and Sydney Moroney each had RBI doubles, with Moroney's plating two.

A solo homer for Rhodes made it 4-2 in the bottom of the second, but the Vikings went deep twice in the third to stretch the lead. Katie White regained the team lead in homers with her seventh, breaking a tie with Frye, to make it 5-2. Two batters later, Lauren Cothern uncorked her first career homer to push the lead to four, 6-2.

In the fourth, Frye would add her third RBI of the day when she singled home Shelby Daniel. White tacked on another run when she drove in Frye with an RBI double one batter later. A run in the fifth would score off an error, and then Frye would trot home on a passed ball in the sixth to provide the margin of victory.

Hannah Gore (7-0) allowed two runs on six hits to earn the victory in the circle.

Game Two: Berry 13, Rhodes 0 (6)

Blair Hall allowed only four hits in the circle and helped her own cause with a homer as the Vikings earned the run-rule win in the second half of the doubleheader.

Berry's game two starter went deep for the third time this season in the second inning to draw first blood against the Lynx. The Vikings (21-4, 8-0 SAA) would tack on two more in the second thanks in part to a Rhodes error. Shelby Daniel would double home Aleeya Thornton after the BC centerfielder reached on an error. Then with two out in the inning, Frye would triple to plate Daniel and put the Vikings up by three.

Another error would lead to four runs in the fourth. After an error on a fly ball extended the inning and brought in a run, White would double home Shelby Daniel with the second run of the inning. Anna Jackson then cranked a two-run double to make it 7-0.

After the Vikings left the bases loaded in the fifth still one run shy of the eight run lead to end the game, Berry would send 10 to the plate in the sixth, plating six to put the game away. Jackson would lead things off with her fifth homer of the season to make it 8-0. Grace Hamilton would double home a pair to build the lead to 10, then RBI knocks by Moroney, Frye, and White gave Berry a baker's dozen on the scoreboard.

Hall would improve to 8-3 with the win, with Madison Hollis pitching a scoreless sixth to end the game.

Berry will wrap up the series against the Lynx Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
