Vikings Win in Final Seconds

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Abby Sprayberry scored with 13 seconds remaining as Berry College won 12-11 after a competitive game against Methodist University Saturday afternoon at Valhalla Stadium.

The Vikings stepped up with an outstanding defense to battle against the Monarchs (2-1). Sprayberry led the Vikings with five goals while AnnaKate Estock scored four, while Dani Taraska had two and Molley Cross scored one goal to add to the score.

Estock got the Vikings started with a goal assisted Cross in the tenth minute. Later on, Estock scored again, assisted by Katie Clare Smith. Still, the Monarchs led the first period with a 3-2 advantage over the Vikings.

Nevertheless, the Vikings kept applying pressure by forcing turnovers. Sprayberry brought Berry back in the game by scoring a goal after a draw control in the first minute of the third period. With the Vikings continuing to pressure, two goals by Estock, and one free position goal by Cross, Sprayberry scored as the horn sounded to end the quarter, with the goal assisted by Estock with the Vikings short a player, making it 9-8 entering the fourth.

The score remained close for the majority of the fourth period, with the teams trading goals back and forth. Entering the final 15 seconds, Sprayberry was fouled inside the 8-meter area. With a free-position opportunity, Sprayberry fired home with 13 seconds remaing. Berry would celebrate its 12-11 victory after a spirited battle against Methodist.

The Vikings will be back in action Tuesday hosting against Calvin at 6 p.m.
