Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | by Jason Hanes

Vikings Roll to Seventh Win in February

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Haley Larsen scored five goals as (RV) Berry overcame a halftime deficit to defeat visiting Calvin, 17-12, in women's lacrosse action at Valhalla Stadium Tuesday night.

Berry (7-0) finishes the month with a seven-game winning streak to start the season. It also ties the longest winning streak in program history, with Tuesday's win marking the first time the Vikings have ever played as a team receiving votes in the IWLCA Top 25 Poll.

"This team is something special," said Berry head coach Brittni Hall. "I do feel like it's a combination of every player out there. We can send anybody from the sideline and know that we're not going to skip a beat when they're out there. I don't know it was a good idea to schedule seven games so quick like that, but this year it worked out."

The Vikings trailed 8-7 after 30 minutes, but a 6-0 run in the third quarter put the Vikings ahead for good. Dani Taraska and Molley Cross each scored a pair of goals during the run, with Cross' tally with nearly 11 minutes gone in the quarter making it 13-8.

Berry kept up the intensity in the fourth quarter as Katie Claire Smith and Larsen each scored twice in the final quarter. With the lead down to four, the duo scored with Berry holding the player-advantage due to a Calvin yellow card, giving the Vikings a 17-11 lead with 2:43 the go. Calvin (0-1) would get a consolation goal a minute later to close the scoring.

For Larsen, it was a triumphant return after missing the last two games due to illness. The Berry captain set season-high marks in goals and points in the victory, as her assist on Smith's final goal gave her a six-point night. The junior also collected nine draw controls, giving her 42 through five games played. "It was tough watching my team play without me," said Larsen. "I knew I had to get back. I'm glad I could contribute and put in the work on the draw. Just being back with my girls was the best."

The Vikings now look ahead to this Friday when Centre visits to begin Southern Athletic Association play. Opening draw is set for here at 3 p.m.
