Stafford Solidifies Sixth Place at Chick-Fil-A Invite

ROME, Ga.- For the second consecutive week, Berry's Jack Stafford rose to the occasion and led the men's golf team with another top 10 finish. Playing at home, Stafford was all too familiar with the hidden divots and uncharacteristically fast greens at the Stonebridge Golf Course. By trusting his know-how, the junior finished sixth individually to help his team to a sixth-place finish at the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.

As a team, the Vikings started hot off the tee on Monday morning. With 14 total birdies on the day, the Vikings carded a low score of 298 and perched at the top of the leaderboard in a tie for fourth. Stafford was accredited with five of those birdies and closed the round sitting just one shot from first place at two-under par.

The pressure of defending the home course against nationally ranked foes such as Emory and Methodist University became too much to overcome for the Vikings. 32 bogies on day two dropped the Vikings two spots on the leaderboard, solidifying a sixth-place finish over two rounds of play. As for Stafford, the greens were not friendly to him on the back nine, but he was able to compose himself by birdieing the 17 hole to earn his top ten finish.

The Vikings fell short of Southern Athletic Association foe Centre College by 13 shots. However, Berry was able to best Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern, who finished in 19th and 20th place, respectively.

Head Coach Brian Farrer compiled a "B" and "C" team. The "B" team achieved a 13th place finish with a score of 615. The "C" team earned 18th place, carding a 629.

One of the best individual finishes came from the "B" team. Charles Kyle earned a tie for 21st by climbing 11 spots on the leaderboard thanks to three birdies in his final round. The junior carded a 150 on his home course.

For the "A" squad, Kevin Verrill remained consistent, shooting 76 and 77 for a tie in 36th. Noah Farland ended the first round in 14th by shooting one-over par. The freshman could not keep the momentum going on Tuesday, carding a round of 84 and closing the tournament in a tie for 63rd. Jay Sanders shaved five shots off his first round as his 75 was enough for Berry's fourth team score. Cam Baker rounded out Berry's "A" team.

The "C" squad was led by Landon Painter. The sophomore from Dalton birdied four holes on the front nine of the tournament and drove away in a tie for 31st, carding 152.

This marked the end of the fall season for Berry's men's golf team. The Vikings will take their talents to the driving range to perfect mechanics until starting up their spring season in March.
