Jack Stafford's big-time comeback to finish in the top 10 in the Golfweek D-III Invitational at the Raven Golf Course in Sandestin, Florida aided Berry's men's golf team to a tie for 11th place amongst a field of 26 which consisted of 16 nationally ranked opponents.
Â
The junior started slow on day one. A three-over par round left the Viking sitting in a tie for 51st place. Stafford's combination of being unsatisfied with his first-round performance coupled with his new familiarity of the course gave the Cisco native the tools he needed to bounce back.
Â
Stafford walked onto the course with vengeance at the beginning of the second round. Birding the first two holes on the day, Stafford stayed consistent and ended the round in a tie for 21st place, shooting 71. Stafford saved his best for the last round. The junior continued to improve throughout the tournament, shooting two-under par on the last day and climbing 12 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for ninth place.
Â
Kevin Verrill was seven strokes behind Stafford in a tie for 44th with a 221. The junior from Atlanta was the front runner for the Vikings after day one, but seven bogies on day two proved to be difficult to compensate.
Â
Noah Farland closed the tournament in a tie for 62nd, shooting 224. The freshman's best round was a 72 in Tuesday's third round.
Â
Sophomore Jay Sanders finished just two strokes behind Farland, ending the tournament 13-over par. The fourth Viking finished in a tie for 75th, climbing 10 spots on the leaderboard thanks to four birdies in his final round.
Â
Cam Baker's finish in a tie for 108th does not accurately portray his performance throughout the event. After shooting 20-over in his first 27 holes, including a two triple-bogeys, Baker settled in and remained on-par for the remainder of the tournament.Â
Â
In total, the Vikings compiled a team score of 881 on the week. Berry finished tied with nationally ranked foes, according to the Golf Coaches Association of America, including No. 16 Babson College, No. 6 Guilford College, and Pomona College. No. 2 Methodist University clutched the crown with a team score of 843.Â
Â
For the first time this season, the Vikings will have a home course advantage as they host the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Rome, Georgia on Oct. 23-24.
