A seven-spot in the sixth inning helped No. 13 Berry to a 10-2 win over Covenant in game one of a doubleheader in Lookout Mountain, Ga., Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings would fall in the nightcap, 2-1.
Game One: Berry 10, Covenant 2 (6 innings)
Katie White homered and
Blair Hall drove in four as the Vikings took game one from Covenant, 10-2, in six innings.
Nine different players scored runs for the Vikings in the win. The only starter that didn't score was
Paige Bennett, who went a team-best 3-for-4 at the plate and saw pinch runner
Sydney Moroney score in her place.
White's homer came after a dropped foul ball and started a two-run inning for the Vikings in the third. Covenant would answer back with two in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 2-2.
In the fifth, the Vikings went ahead for good. Hall singled to right to score
Morgan Frye and give the Vikings the 3-2 lead. The Vikings would quickly salt the game away one inning later. White's sacrifice fly scored Moroney and started the scoring in the inning, with
Riley Jackson sending a single up the middle to plate two more one batter later and make it 6-2. After a single, a fly out, and a bunt single loaded the bases with two out, Hall cleared the bags with a double to right, making it 9-2. Bennett would then re-enter and single down the line in left to plate Hall with the run that would give the Vikings the run-rule margin.
Hannah Gore (10-1) picked up the win in relief by not allowing a hit while walking one and striking out three in 3.1 innings of relief.
Game Two: Covenant 2, Berry 1
While Berry was able to string hits together in game one, the Vikings were only able to manage two hits in the second game as the Scots held on for a 2-1 win.
Both teams took advantage of bases loaded walks to score key runs. The Vikings (19-8) got a bases loaded walk with no one out to Hall in the fourth inning, but the Vikings would strand three on base in the frame. Covenant would tie the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, then in the fifth, the Scots took the lead on a bases loaded walk of their own.
The Vikings would get the tying run on first in the sixth and seventh innings, but both times, the runner would be out before reaching second, ending any threats.
Blair Hall (3-2) took the loss after entering in relief of
Emily Whitehead, who allowed a run on four hits in four innings. Hall allowed one run in one inning, with
Danielle Sudick pitching a clean sixth.
The Vikings will return to action this Saturday in Southern Athletic Association play at Centre. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. EDT.
