The Berry Vikings (2-0) defeated LaGrange 88-83 in overtime on Saturday night in Montgomery, Ala. for their first game in the Huntingdon Classic tournament.
Chase Ellis and
Owen Honroth got the ball rolling for Berry putting up the first seven points between the two. The Panthers surpassed the Vikings to a 14-9 lead, suddenly unable to answer LaGrange on offense. A three pointer from
Blake Campbell tied it a 14 each, but neither team would be able to pull away until the Panthers scored 10 unanswered to give them a 34-25 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Vikings spent the rest of the half playing catchup, but the LaGrange offense was too much, netting four three pointers in the last six minutes of the half. Berry went into halftime in a 46-34 deficit.
LaGrange continued to out shoot Berry to begin the second half, and with 10 minutes remaining still maintained a 10 point lead. Campbell and
Bryce Clark put two layups on the board, shrinking the Panther lead to seven, and from there the Vikings chipped away at LaGrange. With six minutes remaining on the clock, Berry put up eight unanswered points, now only down by one. That is until
Riley Costas netted a three giving his team a 71-69 lead. The two found themselves tied 73 a piece as the clock ticked down to zero.
The Panthers and Vikings found themselves at a back and forth to begin the overtime period, then Ellis made a layup as Berry looked to be running away with the win 84-77. A pair of free throws from
Michael Johnson secured the game two victory for Berry.
Campbell led the team with 23 points, Ellis following close behind with 20.
The Vikings will be back in action on Sunday at 6 p.m. taking on Huntingdon to wrap up their time in the Huntingdon Classic.
