Vikings Stay Unbeaten, Top Huntingdon in Rematch

Chase Ellis was one of four Berry players in double-figures in scoring, netting a game-high 20 as the Vikings defeated Huntingdon, 79-63, Sunday evening in Montgomery, Ala., in the final game of the Huntingdon Classic.

Berry broke open a 58-58 game with just under eight minutes to go, holding the Hawks to just five points over the closing stretches of the game. The run was sparked when Braxton Benham was intentionally fouled going up for a lay-up at the 7:24 mark of the game. Benham would make 1-of-2 from the line, then with the ball after the foul, Blake Campbell cut to the basket on the inbound play for the easy lay-up and a three-point lead. Ellis scored in transition 20 seconds later, and the run was on. With the lead at eight, 67-59, Ellis would block a shot on one end, then connect on a 3-pointer off a Benham feed to put the lead into double-digits and essentially seal the win with 4:15 to go.

Benham added 12 points to go with his team-leading four assists. Campbell scored 11 while Riley Costas added 10. Berry out-rebounded Huntingdon 33-30, with Ellis' nine leading all players.

Down 33-28 with five minutes left in the first half, the Vikings (3-0) went on a 17-5 run to close the half. A pair of 3-pointers by Jordan Kruger and Campbell in the final 1:12 of the half capped the scoring and made it 45-38 at the break. Huntingdon (1-2) would get back in the contest early in the second half, as the game featured six ties and three lead changes.

The Vikings will be back in action this Tuesday when Belhaven visits the Cage Center. Opening tip in Mount Berry, Ga., is set for 6 p.m.
