Men’s Basketball Battle Back to Fight off the Warriors in Home Opener

ROME, Ga. – The Berry College men's basketball team kept up their winning streak as they defeated the Hendrix College Warriors 66-55 on Friday night in their home opener.

Four Vikings scored in double figures, including junior Drew Jones, who led the team with 18 points and tallied six rebounds, Micah Johnson with 13, Michael Johnson with 11 and Chase Ellis with 10 points. With his 10 points, Ellis earned his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.

The first half was a back and forth battle between the Vikings (3-0, 3-0 SAA) and the Warriors (1-2, 1-2 SAA), with six different lead changes and five ties. Going into the half, the Warriors led the Vikings 33-29, but the momentum quickly shifted back to the Vikings after back-to-back jumpers by Austin Brooks and Micah Johnson to start of the second half.

"The first half was a bit ugly," said head coach Mitch Cole. "We played in a hurry and weren't very sharp. We (coaching staff) challenged them (the players) at halftime to play with more poise and effort and I thought our guys responded well. We'll have to learn from our mistakes pretty quickly and have a better overall effort tomorrow to get a win."

As a team, Berry shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field, 50 percent (14-28) in the second, proving that their efficiency on offense ended up being too much for the Warriors defense to handle.

The Vikings are back in action tomorrow as they face the Warriors for the final game of the series at 1 p.m. To keep up with the latest Berry College men's basketball news, follow the team on Twitter @BerryVikings or @BerryMBB_.
