Box Score Jackson, Miss. – The Berry College men's basketball team defeated Millsaps College 67-56 on Saturday to sweep the opening weekend of conference play.
Berry (2-0, 2-0 SAA) scored the first 15 points of the game to lead the contest from start to finish over Millsaps (1-3, 1-3 SAA). Junior
Michael Johnson and freshman
Chase Ellis led the Vikings in scoring with 12 apiece, while the Majors' Cameron Williams and Joshua Miller also contributed 12 each. The overall difference in the game proved to be the dominant Berry defense and control of the paint as the Vikings outrebounded the Majors 31-22.
"It was fun to get back on the court and compete against someone other than ourselves," said head coach
Mitch Cole. "Our players stayed connected during the practice season and it showed this weekend."
Though the Vikings maintained the lead throughout, the Majors fought back within four at 32-28 to start the second half, but Berry expanded the lead back to 12. After a few Millsaps free throws midway through the half, they were within six but Berry quickly answered back and secured the 67-56 victory.
"Millsaps is a tough, athletic team that really defends and attacks," said Cole. "We were able to keep our poise and finish both games well."
