BIRMINGHA, Ala. – Blake Scherrman scored a career and game-high 27 points, but the Berry College men's basketball team fell to Birmingham-Southern College, 87-80, on Saturday night.
The Vikings finished the season 10-16, their best season ever in Division III play.The Panthers improved to 21-6 overall, advancing to the SAA title game on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Scherrman's 27 points led the BC offense. The freshman was 8-of-14 shooting, as well as 5-for-7 from beyond the three-point line. Scherrman was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the loss.
Owen Jacobs and Caleb Johnson both scored double-digit points in the win as well.
Jacobs added 15 points for the Vikes. He was 5-of-10 shooting and grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds.
Johnson posted 13 points, shooting 6-of-18 on the night. He also sank one three-pointer in the loss.
The game was tied 38-38 at the half. BC kept the game within ten, but trailed for the rest of the game. Johnson made a layup with 4:24 remaining, but the Vikings could not get closer.
Harrison Deneka led the BSC offense. Deneka was 7-for-10 shooting, sank one three-pointer and shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
The Panthers shot 51.9-percent (28-of-54) to the Vikings' 42.2-percent (27-of-64). BSC also led the game in rebounds (39-33), assists (16-3) and blocks (5-2). Berry prevailed in blocks (5-2) and forced 13 Birmingham-Southern turnovers to their 12.
"I thought our guys played their hearts out," said Berry College Head Coach Jeff Rogers. "It was a game that came down to a couple of breaks that went the other way at the end. I'm disappointed for the seniors--Owen and Lee. But at the same time, I'm excited about the rest of this group returning next year and continuing to grow as a team."
