BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Caleb Johnson scored 21 points, but the Berry College men's basketball team fell to Birmingham-Southern College, 77-62, on Friday night.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in the Southern Athletic Association. The win improved the Panthers to 16-6 and 11-0. BSC clinched the SAA regular season championship and will host the conference tournament.
Johnson's 21 points led the Viking offense. He was 7-of-20 from the field, sank four three-pointers and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
Owen Jacobs and Blake Scherrman added 14 and 11 points respectively for the BC offense.
Jacobs was 5-of-11 shooting, sank one three-pointer and grabbed nine rebounds in the loss. Scherrman was 4-for-14 from the field. He also sank two three-pointers on the night.
On the defensive side, Alton McCloud grabbed 12 rebounds for Berry.
The Vikings led 40-35 at the half. BSC took a 43-41 lead with just over 16:00 minutes left in the game. Berry was never ahead again.
For the Panthers, Ian Thom scored 16 points. Thom was 5-for-8 from the field, as well as 6-of-9 from the free throw line.
BC led the game in rebounds (44-34), but the Panthers shot 55.6-percent (25-of-45) to the Vikings' 30.9-percent (21-of-68).
Berry travels to Jackson, Mississippi to take on Millsaps College in their next SAA match-up. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
