Box Score ROME, Ga. -- Berry College rallied to force overtime, but Birmingham-Southern College prevailed, 87-86, in a wild game at the Cage Center on Friday night.
BSC improved to 6-6 and 2-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Vikings dropped to 3-8 and 1-1 in the SAA.
Owen Jacobs led BC with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Blake Scherrman finished with 15 points before fouling out and Caleb Johnson added 14 for the home team.
The Panthers led at halftime, 39-32. BSC led by as many as 13 points in the second half before the Vikes rallied.
Berry tied it twice in the last 2:26 of regulation. Kahlil Newkirk (eight points) made a steal and layup to knot the game at 76-76 with 24 seconds remaining.
BSC's Evan Lewis then made one of two free throws with four seconds left. Newkirk took the inbound pass and was fouled on a long three-pointer with .04 seconds left. He made the first and missed the next two shots and the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, Newkirk put Berry ahead 86-84 on a three-pointer in the corner with 38 seconds on the clock.
The Panthers' Harrison Daneka, however, responded with a game-winning trey with eight seconds left for the decisive points.
Jacobs and Newkirk both had shots before time expired, but they rimmed out.
Alex Avery had a game-high 23 points for Birmingham-Southern.
The Panthers shot 57-percent (30-52) to Berry's 45-percent (29-65). BC won the battle of the boards, 41-30.
The Vikings host Millsaps College on Sunday at 3 p.m.
