ROME, Ga. – Freshman Alex Weems scored a season-high 11 points, but the Berry College women's basketball team lost to Centre College, 63-52, on Friday night.
The loss dropped the Vikings to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the Southern Athletic Association. The win improved the Colonels to 5-13 and 3-4.
Weems' 11 points led the BC offense. She was 4-of-7 shooting, as well as 3-of-7 from the free throw line. Weems also grabbed five rebounds, passed one assist and had two steals in the loss as well.
Two other players scored 10 points in the loss: Valerie McLure and Megan Casey.
McLure was 4-of-6 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She also grabbed four rebounds and had one steal. Casey was 5-of-11 shooting and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Berry kept the game close in the first half and were only behind, 28-27, at the half. The Vikes then jumped out to a 33-28 lead to start off the third quarter.
The Colonels gained their final lead of the game with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter.
For the Colonels, Alexis Guy scored 19 points. Guy was 7-of-14 shooting, sank one three-pointer and was 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Teammate Paige Kellam also added 16 points in the win. Kellam was 4-of-7 shooting, as well as 8-for-9 from the free throw line.
Centre shot 44.9-percent (22-of-49) to Berry's 32.9-percent (20-of-61). The Colonels also led the game in rebounds (42-34), while the Vikings led the game in assists (15-10) and steals (8-7).
BC will host Sewanee in their next SAA match-up on Sunday, January 31. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in the Cage Center.
