LaGrange Buzzer-Beater Upends Men's Basketball, 90-89

ROME, Ga. - - Mark Wagner made a buzzer-beater layup as the Berry College men's basketball team fell to LaGrange College, 90-89, in their home-opener on Wednesday night. 

The Vikings (0-2) shot 64.2-percent to the Panthers' (1-0) 41.6-percent in the loss. 

Owen Jacobs' double-double led the Berry offense. Jacobs scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss. He was 10-of-12 in the field and hit a three-pointer for the Vikes. 

BC started the game strong, jumping out to an early 25-10 lead with a little over thirteen and a half minutes left in the first half. The Panthers chipped away at the deficit, and the lead was cut to 46-44 by the half. 

Wagner moved the score to 46 apiece, sinking a jump shot less than 20 seconds into the second half. The lead then shifted a dozen times before the end of the game. 

Fouled with four seconds left, Lukas Korn sank two free throws to give the Vikes an 89-88 lead. LaGrange inbounded the ball to Wagner and he dribbled nearly the length of the court before making his last second shot.

Blake Scherrman and Alton McCloud also added double-digit points to the BC offense. 

Scherrman, 4-of-8 in the paint, scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and collected two steals for Berry. McCloud was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field. He also sunk 3 three-pointers in the defeat. 

Lee McCloud and Coleman Ellingsworth each contributed to the BC offense as well, scoring nine and eight points respectively. They each tacked on two three-pointers as well. 

Berry led the game in rebounds (41-32) and assists (19-13). The Panthers, however, forced 29 turnovers to Berry's 14. 

For LaGrange, Wagner posted a team-high 20 points. Wagner shot 8-for-20 in the field, as well as 4-for-4 from the free-throw line for the Panthers. 

Berry returns to action against Huntingdon College on Saturday, Nov. 21. Game time is 3 p.m. at the Cage Center.
