Box Score ROME, Ga. -- Berry College's Mac Whalen surpassed 1,000 career points, but the Vikings lost to visiting Rhodes College, 88-72, on Friday night.
Rhodes moved to 14-8 and 7-4 in the Southern Athletic Association. Berry dropped to 4-17, 1-9.
Whalen needed 11 points to reach the century mark and got 15 in the game. Hunter Smoak also scored 15 points and Owen Jacobs contributed 14 and had nine rebounds for the home team.
"We played hard and fought until the end," said Berry Head Coach Jeff Rogers. "But we have to find a way to rally and win. Making free throws is one way to keep a game close and win games."
Shane Watson tallied a game-best 29 points for the Lynx. He was 7-9 shooting and made 15-16 free throws.
Free throws were a major factor in the game. The officials signaled 64 fouls in the contest. RC took advantage by making 39-46 from the charity stripe. The Vikes countered with 27-45 for 60-percent.
The Lynx were 23-45 (51-percent) to BC's 47-percent from the field. Rhodes led by double figures most of the game, but BC rallied. Doug Cotter's jumper cut the deficit to 55-49 with 10:58 remaining. The Vikings got no closer.
Rhodes held a 41-31 lead at halftime. RC shot 50-percent (10-20) to Berry's 42-percent (8-19). The Lynx converted 20-22 first half free throws to BC's 13-23. RC's Watson had 13 points at the break. Jacobs led the Vikings with 11.
Berry hosts Hendrix on Sunday at 3 p.m. Senior Day recognition is prior to the game.
