Berry Upset Bid Falls Short at Centre

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. – Berry College lost its SAA quarterfinal match at top-seeded Centre, 74-58, on Friday afternoon.

Jonathan Abrams, Mac Howard and Mac Whalen all had 10 points for the Vikings in the defeat. Howard was 5-6 from the field for Berry. Abrams, playing his last collegiate game, had a team-high eight rebounds. Whalen was 3-5 shooting and had three assists.

Berry, the eight seed in tournament, ends its season at 5-21. The Colonels (18-5) advanced to Saturday's semifinals.

BC lost by 24 and 21 points in its earlier games against Centre, but were much more competitive on Friday. Berry went on a 7-2 run over the last 3:35 of the first half to cut the CC deficit to 33-29 at the break.

Lee McCloud (nine points) scored the first basket of the second half, but Berry got no closer. The Vikings kept the lead under 10 points most of the period. BC had to foul at game's end, and the 16 point Centre margin was the biggest of the day.

"We had our chances late in the game," said Berry Interim Head Coach Derek Taylor. "We had the lead down to eight points with less than three minutes remaining. Centre isn't going to beat itself, and we just couldn't make the plays to win the game."

The Colonels converted 25-35 (77%) free throws in the game to 15-16 (94%) for the Vikings. The teams combined for just 16 turnovers (Centre committed seven).

John Karsner and Blake Scinta both contributed 18 points for Centre.
