Vikings Can't Overcome Slow First Quarter Fall to Storming Petrels

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Berry College women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start as they dropped their SAA opener 48-44 to the Oglethorpe University Storming Petrels on Wednesday evening on the road.

It was a rough start for the Vikings as they scored just one basket after the Storming Petrels jumped out to a 15-0 lead. Briaiah Lewis sank two free throws to make it 15-2 but Oglethorpe pulled out to a 19-2 advantage at the end of the first.

The Vikings came to life to start the second as Lewis knocked down the first bucket of the game for the Vikings as they went on a 6-0 run to make it 19-8. The Storming Petrels would increase their lead to 26-8 but once again the Vikings rallied with a 9-3 run led by six points from Callie Jackson and three from Elly Callihan to cut their deficit to 29-17. The Storming Petrels answered with a three as the Vikings trailed 32-17 at the half.

The Vikings regrouped at halftime and came storming out of the gates on a 10-0 run over the first six minutes of the third led by six more points from Lewis to pull within 32-27. The Vikings defense also held the Storming Petrels off the board over the first eight minutes but eventually they got points from the free throw line as they increased their lead back to 39-28 at the end of the third.

The Storming Petrels answered back to start the fourth as they pushed their back out to 14 at 44-30. The Vikings regrouped again as their defense shut down the Storming Petrels while the offense went on an 8-0 running including back to back buckets by Isabella Ramirez with a big steal as she made it 44-40 with :17 seconds left. The Vikings tried to foul to make it closer but they ran out of time as they fell 48-44.

Lewis led the Vikings with 16 points on 7-for-11 from the field while Ely Callihan led with 11 rebounds and seven points.

The Vikings will look to rebound at home against Huntingdon College on Saturday, December 6 at 4:30 PM.
