MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Berry women's track team competed in SAA Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday at Rhodes College. Berry women ran strong performances in the 800, 1500, 5000, 10000, 3k steeplechase and 4x400 relay.
Abuhamadieh finished 3rd overall with a time of 40:56.6, a PR by 1:17. Dorris was close behind finishing 4th in a time of 41:02.82. Stewart finished in 12th place overall in a time of 44:01.48, a 35 second PR. Stryker raced to a time of 44:47.63, a 1:15 PR.
In the 3k steeplechase, sophomore Danielle Ferro was the lone Viking competitor. Ferro finished 2nd overall in a time of 11:40.92. She broke the school record that she set at the Emory Invitational earlier this year by 10 seconds.
On Saturday, the Vikings were back for more racing in the 5000, 1500, 800, and 4x400 relay.
In the 5000, Abuhamadieh and Stryker also competed in this event as well as Kayla Heflin, Ferro, and freshman Nina Thomason. Ferro placed 3rd overall with a time of 19:12.01. Abuhamadieh was 7th with a time of 19:37.95, a 12 second PR. Heflin came in next for Berry with a time of 20:18.06, a 5-second PR, and a 16th overall finish. She was followed closely by Thomason who finished 18th overall (20:33.76). Stryker ran a 21:29.2 and was 20th.
"This conference meet was great," Abuhamadieh said. "It couldn't have gone better for me. I have some mixed feelings about it knowing that this will be my last conference meet, but I'm so happy we were all able to do so well."
Heflin, Stewart, Nicole Fredette as well as freshman Alainna Chretien ran in the 1500. Fredette raced hard staying with the top pack of the race to finish 6th overall in a time of 5:08.92. Chretien had a strong finish at the end to finish 14th overall with a time of 5:31.30, a 2-second PR. Stewart and Heflin raced together to finish 19th and 20th respectively with a time of 5:39.01 and 5:40.19.
For the 800, Fredette was the only runner for Berry. She finished 8th overall after a strong kick with a time of 2:29.34.
Berry finished the meet with the 4x400 relay. Thomason, Dorris, Fredette, and Ferro clocked a 3:38.92 time and a 7th place finish.
The Berry women who finished in the top-8 in their open race will continue their season on to the North Central Invitational in Naperville, Ill. The meet is an attempt to qualify for the May 8 Nationals.
