ROME, Ga. – The Berry track team competed this weekend at Barron Stadium in the Shorter Invitational. The Berry women raced in the 1500, 800, 400, and 5k.
The women started off with the 1500. The Vikings who raced in this event were seniors Kayla Heflin, Annika Stryker, Hibah Abuhamdieh; junior Rachel Dorris; sophomore Danielle Ferro; and freshman Nina Thomason. The majority of the women all ran in one heat and were able to work together throughout the race.
Ferro finished first for Berry with a time of 5:15.90 and 11th overall. Dorris came in right after in 5:16.47. Heflin had the next fastest time with a 5:20.54 and a 14th overall finish. This was a 16 second PR for Heflin. Abuhamadieh and Thomason worked together during their race finishing in 5:25.22 and 5:25.24 and 18th and 19th overall respectively. Annika Stryker ran a 5:38.23 with a 23rd overall finish.
The next race for Berry was the 400m dash. Senior Nicole Fredette ran a 1:05.4 finishing 1st in her heat and 18th overall. This was her first open 400.
The Vikings then competed in the 800m run. Fredette, Dorris, Thomason, and Heflin all had strong races. Fredette had the fastest time for the Vikings at 2:29.54. She finished 2nd in her heat and 19th overall.
Thomason and Dorris ran together for their 800 having it come down to a kick at the end. Thomason was able to edge out Dorris to finish in a time of 2:40.74 and a 35th overall finish. Dorris came in with a 2:40.97 and a 37th overall finish. Heflin clocked a2:44.97 and was 43rd overall.
The final event that Berry competed in was the 5k. Freshman Alainna Chretien and Abuhamadieh both raced to PRs. Both women started off near the back of the pack and began working their way up throughout the race. Abuhamadieh finished 2nd in her heat with a time of 19:53.57--a six second PR--and an overall finish of 13th. Chretien finished 21st overall with a final time of 21:24.99--a 23 second PR.
The Berry Vikings will compete next at the North Florida Twilight in Jacksonville, Florida on April 10.
