CLINTON, Miss. – The Berry women's track team kicked off their outdoor track season at the Mississippi College Season Opener. Berry competed against Millsaps, Rhodes, and Oglethorpe from the SAA conference, as well as 10 other teams. The Berry women raced in the 5K, 1500, 800, and 4x400 relay. The meet was filled with PRs for the Vikings.
Sophomore Danielle Ferro and freshman Alainna Chretien started off the day racing in the 5K. Ferro went on to run a strong race and finished 2nd overall with a time of 19:10.82--a 3 second PR for her. Chretien also ran a strong race finishing 14th overall with a time of 21:47.85. Chretien took a whole minute off of her former 5K PR.
The Berry women's team also had a strong performance in the 1500 race. Senior Annika Stryker had the strongest race of the day managing to PR by a whopping 47 seconds; Stryker ran a time of 5:30.49 placing 19th overall. Senior Kayla Heflin also had a well-run race finishing 21st overall in a time of 5:36.15 and shaved 1 second off of her previous PR.
The next event for Berry was the 800 run. Senior Nicole Fredette had a great performance by finishing 3rd overall against a very strong field. Fredette ran a time of 2:27.10, her second-fastest 800. Senior Kayla Heflin also ran in the 800 for her second race of the day. She clocked a 2:50.55 in her first collegiate 800 race.
"I was a little disappointed at first when I finished second in my heat," Fredette said. "But I was really excited when I looked at the results and saw that I had placed in top 3. I've never placed that well before so that was just a great experience."
The Viking's closed off their strong day with the 4x400 relay. Fredette, Ferro, Heflin, and Chretien each contributed running strong laps for a time of 4:51.93 and a 14th overall finish.
The Berry Vikings will race next at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia on March 20 and 21.
