ATLANTA — Berry College's Bayleigh Masterson and Emily Schechter have swept the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week awards, the league office announced on Monday.
Masterson and Schechter led the Berry College softball team to a 9-7 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Emory on Sunday. Game two was halted due to darkness and will resume at a later date.
Masterson, a sophomore from Louisville, Ky., was 3-for-5 in the outing with a pair of RBI's, a home run and a run scored to help the Vikings rally from a 7-0 deficit. Her two-RBI blast came in the sixth inning, to put Berry within striking distance. The Vikings went ahead in the seventh. On the year, she is hitting .500 with four RBI's in three games. This is her first SAA Player of the Week honor this season.
Schechter, a sophomore from Leesburg, Va., pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing just one run to help the Vikings rally. She also struck out one batter to earn her first SAA Pitcher of the Week honor.
Berry will host DePauw on Friday at 2:00 p.m. for the team's home opener.
