VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The No. 4 Berry College softball team dropped the opening game of the NCAA Division III Super Regionals on Friday, falling to the No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan Marlins 4-0.
Kassie Howard earned the start for Berry, scattering four hits in the complete-game outing, allowing four runs and striking out six.
Bayleigh Masterson earned a two-out walk in the top of the first, but was left stranded after Hanna Hull of Virginia Wesleyan fanned three in the opening frame. After a groundout and a strikeout, Cassetty Howerin walked before Katelyn Biando sent a two-RBI double to left field, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
Kayla Sangrey then earned Berry’s lone hit of the afternoon in the second, but a three-run homer in the bottom of the third from Howerin gave the Marlins the 4-0 advantage.
Howard settled in nicely following the third inning, allowing just two base runners for the remainder of the game.
The Vikings find themselves down in the series, needing to take two wins tomorrow to advance to Oklahoma City. Game two is set to begin tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., weather permitting. Updates will be posted to the Berry Athletics Twitter if the game is adjusted.
