ROME, Ga. — Rising sophomore Preston DeSantis shot a nine-under par 135 to tie for first at the US Amateur Qualifier, punching his ticket to the top amateur golf tournament in the country.
The tournament will run from August 12-18 at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. The tournament consists of two days of stroke play, with the leading 64 competitors then playing a knockout competition held at match play to decide the champion. All knockout matches are over 18 holes except for the final, which consists of 36 holes, separated into morning and afternoon 18-hole rounds. DeSantis will compete in a field of 312 competitors.
DeSantis earned the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Newcomer of the Year honor following a phenomenal freshman campaign. He jumped three spots on the final day of the SAA Championships to tie for third individually, helping the Vikings to the team's third runner-up finish in four years. DeSantis also posted an impressive eight under total at the Rhodes Spring Classic, helping the team to a record-setting 19 under victory. On the year, he led the team with a 73.46 scoring average and qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
