Berry College

Richter was named the Head Coach of the Vikings in 2024 after serving as the assistant for the previous two seasons and accumulating 44 wins and two SAA Championships. 

The 2024-2025 season was a magnificent debut for Richter, as he led his young team to a 20-9 overall record and a 10-2 record in conference while winning the Regular Season and Conference Championships. Ricther led his team at the highest level throughout the year, as him and his staff were recognized as the SAA Coaching Staff of the Year. Richter's first year success did not stop there though, as he led the program to their first ever NCAA Tournament win. Richter also developed four All-SAA level athletes as well as an Athlete of the Year in Braxton Benham. 

Matthew Richter rejoined the Berry coaching staff in June of 2022, after previously serving on the staff from 2018-2021 for the Vikings. He spent the 2021-22 season at Wabash College. 
  
Richter was part of a historic season with the Little Giants, going 28-4 and winning the Regular Season and Conference Tournament Championships in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wabash made the Division III Final Four and finished ranked fifth in the national poll. While at Wabash, Richter was able to work with the Division III Most Outstanding Player, Jack Davidson. 
  
Richter graduated from Berry in 2021 with an MBA from the Campbell School of Business. In his time at Berry, Richter was part of multiple impressive Vikings squads. In his final season, he helped coach a team that finished 13-1, ranked 11th in the D3hoops.com poll, and won both the Southern Athletic Association regular season and tournament championships. It was the program’s first-ever regular season SAA title in men’s basketball. 
  
In Richter’s first season as an assistant, the Vikings finished 19-7 overall, which was the most wins in a single season in school history since joining the NCAA Division III. Berry would repeat the 19-win effort with a 19-9 campaign in 2019-2020 for an overall record of 51-17 over three seasons, the best three-year stretch in school history at the time. Richter helped nine players earn All-SAA selections during his time with the Vikings. 
  
Richter spent the 2017-18 season as a video coordinator at the University of New Orleans after serving one season at White River Valley High School as the head junior varsity basketball coach and social studies teacher. 
  
Richter graduated from Butler University in 2016 where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in middle and secondary education. He worked three seasons as a student manager for the Bulldogs, during which the team made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Round of 32. Richter also coached the freshman basketball team at Bishop Chatard while he was a student at Butler.
