ROME, Ga. - Berry College's inaugural football game against Maryville College on the Berry campus highlights the Vikings' 2013 schedule, which was released Monday.
The Maryville game will be one of five home games for the Vikings in their first season of intercollegiate football competition.
Berry kicks off its first season on Sept. 7, 2013, when it welcomes the Scots of Maryville College.
"It is significant that Berry College's inaugural season of intercollegiate football would come in 2013, which corresponds with Berry's introduction as a fully active member of the NCAA," said Todd Brooks, Berry's Director of Athletics.
Berry is entering its final year of a four-year provisional membership in the NCAA.
"Having a complete schedule in front of us really brings home the reality that football is about to make its mark at Berry College," Brooks said. "This is an exciting time to be a part of what is happening at Berry."
"A huge positive for our football program is our membership in the Southern Athletic Association," Berry head coach Tony Kunczewski said. "We are involved in an outstanding conference both academically and athletically. Plus, we get to play some of top small-college programs in the southeast in our non-conference portion of the schedule. We know it's going to be a challenge, but we will be working hard to get the right student-athletes in place to accept that challenge."
The Vikings will play LaGrange College's junior varsity team at home on Sept. 15, and will also host contests against Southern Athletic Association rivals Centre College, Birmingham-Southern College and the University of the South (Sewanee) later in the season.
Berry's first road contest is scheduled to be played Sept. 21, when the Vikings travel to Macon to face NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision member Mercer University.
That contest marks the first of three consecutive road games, and will be followed by trips to Memphis, Tenn., to face SAA opponent Rhodes College and St. Louis, Mo., to play against Washington University.
Washington University will become a football-only member of the SAA beginning in the fall of 2015.
The Vikings will also play conference road games at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., and at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., respectively.
Kickoff times will be announced at a later date.
