ROME, Ga. – Head Coach David Beasley earned his 600th career victory after 21 seasons at the helm, as the Berry College baseball program defeated the Emory University Eagles 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Berry jumped out to an early lead, driving in three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Casey Whitaker singled to right field to bring home both Evan Romeo and Zack Walch and give the Vikings' their first 2-0 lead of the day. Jacob Delk then singled to right field, knocking in Dylan Beasley to expand the lead to 3-0 before rounding out the inning. Berry added an additional three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, pushing their lead to 6-0, following a fielder's choice RBI from Whitaker, a sacrifice groundout by Delk and an Eagles' error.
Emory answered in the top of the eighth inning, plating three runs while looking to string together a comeback. Back-to-back RBI singles from Bubby Terp and Christopher Stern, as well as a Viking error, cut the lead in half to 6-3.
Spence Johns (3-0) earned the win on the mound for Berry, tossing six-complete innings, while allowing just three hits and no runs, striking out five Eagles. Will Gibbons closed out the game on the mound for the Vikings, earning his second save of the season after leading Berry to a one-two-three ninth inning to ensure the 6-3 win.
On the day, Berry combined for six hits, while committing just one error to improve to 9-4 overall on the year. Emory finished the day with six hits and three errors, falling to 4-9 on the season.
