Baseball Wins Offensive Slugfest, Earns Series Sweep over BSC 16-10

ROME, Ga. – With both teams combining for 35 hits, the Berry College baseball team outlasted Birmingham-Southern College 16-10 on Saturday morning to complete the three-game sweep over the Panthers. 

With first pitch just after 9:30 a.m., Berry opened up scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Casey Whitaker reached first base on a fielder's choice to bring home Zack Walch and give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead. BSC then plated four runs in the top of the third inning, following RBI base hits by Will Toner, Tyler Wise and Preston Munns to take a 4-1 lead.

Berry answered, stringing together seven hits and a sac fly, while forcing a Panthers' error to plate eight runs and regain a 9-4 lead by the end of the third inning. Evan Romeo and Devin Post led the inning with two RBIs apiece, while Austin Brooks, Jacob Delk, Tyler Calvert, Walch and Spence Johns also drove in a run.

The Panthers then added two additional runs in each of the next three consecutive innings, but the Vikings added four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off three home runs, one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and an additional two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, ensuring the 16-10 victory.

Both Dylan Beasley and Johns led Berry's offense in the win, hitting 4-for-5 at the plate, with Post adding an additional three hits in the game as well. Richie Misischia led the Panther's offense, finishing the game 4-for-6 at the plate as well, with Wise adding three hits in the outing. On the day, Berry added 18 hits to BSC's 17, while the Panthers committed three errors to the Vikings' zero.

J. T. Eggert earned the win on the mound for Berry, tossing one inning, while allowing three hits and striking out two batters. Five other Vikings' saw action on the mound in the outing as well, as Berry improved to 12-4 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. John Michael Shirley took the loss on the mound for the Panthers, tossing 2.2 innings, while allowing five hits and three earned runs, as BSC falls to 7-9 and 1-5 on the year.

The Vikings will travel to Atlanta to take on Emory University in their next matchup on Tuesday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. before a weekend series at Millsaps.
