MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Berry College softball team dropped an SAA doubleheader to the Rhodes College Lynx as they fell 9-1 and then 6-5 on Saturday afternoon on the road.
Game 1:
Ava Fouts got the start and took the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings allowing nine runs, seven earned on ten hits while walking four and striking out one.
Lauren Cothern led the offense going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
It was a scoreless game through the first two innings until Cothern blasted a two out solo home run in the third to put the Vikings up 1-0. The Lynx responded with a four spot in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.Â
The Vikings tried to respond but were unable to muster any offense while the Lynx scored again in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Things then got ugly in the bottom of the fifth as the Lynx took advantage of an error to plate four more runs as the Vikings fell 9-1 in five innings.
Game 2:
Megan Rapillo got the start and pitched 9 1/3 innings allowing three runs, one earned on four hits while walking six and striking out four.Â
Erica Bennett led the Vikings offense going 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.
The Vikings looked to bounce back in the second game as they took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two run bomb by
Erica Bennett. Rapillo continued to keep the Lynx off the board while the Vikings added to their lead in the top of the third as Cothern crushed her second home run of the day to push the Vikings advantage to 3-0.Â
The Lynx rallied as they took advantage of an error to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the third. Rapillo continued to keep the Lynx off the board but the Vikings went to the bullpen and the Lynx managed to score two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 3-3. The game then headed to extra innings as neither team were able to produce the winning run. The Vikings then took the lead in the top of the 10th as
Elly Bennett delivered a clutch one out RBI single to make it 4-3. The Vikings tried to close out the game in the bottom half but were unable to do so as they fell 5-4.
With Millsaps losing to Southwestern the Vikings have secured a spot in the SAA Championships and will look to finish the regular season strong against Rhodes on Sunday, May 3 at 1:00 PM.
